Bill Browder is an economist and CEO of Hermitage Capital Management, an investment fund specializing in Russian markets. In 2008, one of Browder’s lawyers, Sergei Magnitsky, was arrested on charges of tax evasion after accusing Russian tax officials of systematic theft and fraud. Magnitsky died in custody after 11 months of awaiting trial. In response, Browder began a global campaign resulting in the Magnitsky Act, a law prohibiting Russian officials thought to be responsible for the death of Magnitsky from entering the U.S. or its banking systems. Browder’s efforts have resulted in six countries adopting similar legislation.
