Today, Kenyans vote in a presidential election fraught with irregularities. Here is HRF’s International Legal Associate Celine Assaf Boustani’s take on the topic:
“After Kenya’s Supreme Court overturned the August election, we hoped against hope that the rule of law had returned to Kenya. But today’s election is more of the same. Biya is manipulating the judiciary, and his security forces are using violence to intimidate voters. The main opposition party has withdrawn from the race because its leader recognize the electoral system is rigged against them. Today’s election in Kenya will not be free or fair; there is much work to be done to restore democracy to Kenya."
