1/ HRF condemns the staging of a closed swearing-in ceremony for Tanzanian dictator Samia Suluhu Hassan today. Hassan declared victory with 98% of the vote in last week’s sham elections, with two major opposition parties barred from participating and opposition leader Tundu Lissu in jail.
2/ Only four foreign heads of state attended Hassan’s swearing-in today in the capital Dodoma. Hassan blamed foreign nationals for mass protests that followed the Oct. 29 elections, as an unknown number of Tanzanians lay injured or massacred for protesting her illegitimate election. (AP News)
3/ The UN confirmed the deaths of 10 protesters. Opposition party CHADEMA reports that up to 700 people have been killed in the unrest. Nationwide internet restrictions in place since election day have made it difficult to verify the true number of casualties. (France 24)
