Soledad Chapeton

Mayor of El Alto, the second largest city in Bolivia

The Americas

Soledad Chapeton is the mayor of El Alto, the second largest city in Bolivia. A woman of indigenous aymara descent, Chapeton was elected mayor in 2015, after running a successful race against the party of authoritarian incumbent Evo Morales. Her fight to give attention to the needs of the city won her half the popular vote, making her the first female mayor of El Alto. In an attempt to force her resignation, in 2016, a mob led by Morales’s authoritarian regime burned down El Alto’s city hall, killing six public officials who worked for Chapeton. Refusing to step down, Soledad continued advocating for peace and to recover democracy in Bolivia. She played an important role in achieving this after the electoral fraud perpetrated by Morales in 2019.
