2016 marked HRF’s debut at SXSW. It was a debut that did not go unnoticed, as it was the first time we presented Flash Drives for Freedom, USA Today called the campaign one of the highlights of the 2016 SXSW festival in Austin, Texas.
The impact at SXSW led HRF to taking the project to the WIRED conference, DEF CON, PubCon, and the Mozilla Festival, where we informed diverse audiences on the human rights situation in North Korea. Through these efforts, we collected nearly 20,000 drives, which were in turn sent into North Korea.
It also established our presence at the annual festival for what we expect to be many years to come.
