Uganda’s War Against Gays

Kasha Jacqueline (Nabagesera)
Sub-Saharan Africa

Ugandan LGBT activist Kasha Jacqueline discusses the state-sponsored homophobia resulting from her country’s anti-homosexuality law.The law forbids not only homosexual acts, but also “homosexual promotion,” and requires that homosexual people be turned over to state authorities. Jacqueline explains how American missionaries influenced Ugandan parliamentarians views on homosexuality; persecution of LGBT individuals has become more severe as a result. In Jacqueline’s view, the state is guilty of promoting prevailing views of both intolerance and homophobia. Jacqueline urges those who advocate for human rights to express solidarity with Ugandans affected by homophobia.
