In a joint letter coordinated by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), 33 organisations around the globe have written to UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer asking him to meet Sebastien Lai, the son of British publisher Jimmy Lai who has been arbitrarily jailed in Hong Kong since December 2020.
“As a British citizen facing an unthinkable ordeal, Sebastien Lai deserves to hear first-hand from the Prime Minister what the UK is doing to secure his father’s release. Today, on the poignant anniversary of the closure of Jimmy Lai’s newspaper Apple Daily, we urge Sir Keir to meet Sebastien without further delay, to relieve his anguish and seek ways to work together to secure his father’s release. The UK Government has said this case is a priority — now it needs to prove it.“
