Today marks the fifth year Hong Kong pro-democracy leader Owen Chow is spending his birthday behind bars.
Charged with “conspiracy to commit subversion” under Hong Kong’s infamous national security law, Owen was sentenced to nearly eight years in prison after a 21-month trial that began two years after his initial arrest. In total, Owen will spend almost a decade in prison for simply exercising his fundamental rights and speaking out for Hong Kong’s freedoms.
