President Rodrigo Duterte orders police to rejoin Philippines’ war on

(Deutsche Welle) – Philippine police on Tuesday were ordered to rejoin the war on drugs, overturning President Duterte’s decision two months ago to leave the campaign in the hands of the government’s anti-drug agency.

Duterte had removed police from anti-drug operations following criticism from human rights advocates, foreign governments and the United Nations after thousands of drug suspects were killed during the campaign and local street protests took place when three teenagers were killed in the crackdown.

Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said the new memorandum directed the Philippine National Police and other law enforcement agencies “to resume providing active support” to the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency.
