HRF welcomes the release on bail of prominent Ugandan human rights advocate Sarah Bireete and calls for the bail restrictions and absurd charges imposed on her to be dropped.

Police raided the home of @SarahBireete, a lawyer and head of the Center for Constitutional Governance, on Dec. 30, 2025. She was detained as part of a wave of repression ahead of Uganda’s Jan. 15 general elections.

On Jan. 2, the Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court arraigned Bireete, an internationally recognized election observer, on the vague charge of unlawfully obtaining and disclosing Ugandan voters’ information. The court gave the prosecution until Jan. 21 to respond to her defense lawyer’s application for bail and remanded her to Luzira prison.
On Jan. 28, after spending nearly a month in custody, the court granted Bireete bail but ordered her to not leave the country without the court’s permission.
