Americas (Nicaragua) – April 6, 2026

HRF condemns the Nicaraguan regime’s persecution of religious communities and institutions. The prohibition of Easter celebrations and repression of religious leaders are direct violations of the fundamental freedoms of religion, assembly, and expression. Democracies must call for an end to these oppressive policies.
For the third year in a row, the Ortega-Murillo regime banned public celebrations during the Holy Week of Easter as part of a long-standing policy of persecution of Christian leaders and institutions. Public processions are strictly prohibited, while celebrations within churches will be closely monitored by the regime’s security officials.

Religious leaders have been a prime target of the regime since the political crisis of 2018, when they aided anti-regime protesters. At least 260 clergy members have been forced into exile, and many were arbitrarily imprisoned before being expelled and stripped of their citizenship.

Many Christian NGOs that provided critical social support services have been shut down in a crackdown on all independent civil society as Ortega and Murillo seek to consolidate totalitarian rule. This week, a Baptist denomination was stripped of its legal status, making it the 18th religious denomination to be banned in Nicaragua.
