Americas – October 1

/ HRF condemns the persecution of critics by the Ortega-Murillo regime both in Nicaragua and abroad. Democracies worldwide must increase pressure on the regime to prevent further violations and ensure the safety of Nicaraguans forced into exile for standing up against tyranny.

/ The UN’s inquiry mechanism for Nicaragua released a report detailing the Ortega-Murillo regime’s transnational persecution tactics. The UN has also denounced the presidential couple for orchestrating systematic crimes against humanity targeting the Nicaraguan people. https://www.ohchr.org/en/press-releases/2025/09/nicaragua-un-experts-warn-escalating-repression-reaching-beyond-borders

/ The victims of these tactics are often among the more than 450 Nicaraguans forcibly expelled from their country after enduring arbitrary detention and inhumane treatment in prison. Many were stripped of their citizenship, leaving them stateless. Those targeted not only face direct threats but also witness reprisals against their families back in Nicaragua.

/ In June, Roberto Samcam, an outspoken critic of the regime who was living in exile in Costa Rica, was assassinated in an attack directed by the Ortega-Murillo regime. https://confidencial.digital/en/nation/the-killing-of-roberto-samcam-in-costa-rica
