HRF expresses deep concern over the Taliban’s intensified crackdown on the media over the past month, including arbitrary arrests, threats, and physical violence against journalists. HRF calls for stronger and more coordinated action by the international community to protect press freedom in Afghanistan.

According to the Afghanistan Media Support Organisation (AMSO), between June and July 2026, the Taliban arbitrarily detained or physically assaulted journalists for covering official events and other routine disputes. Those released were allegedly pressured to remain silent about the mistreatment they experienced.

Additionally, the Taliban’s Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice has intensified its interference in the media, reportedly warning some radio stations against airing female voices.

HRF classifies Afghanistan as ruled by a fully authoritarian regime and will continue to closely monitor the Taliban’s intimidation of the media, civil society leaders, and the general public.
