HRF expresses deep concern over reports of harassment and surveillance of journalists in Hong Kong and calls for the full protection of individuals on the front lines of press freedom.
InMedia, an independent outlet in Hong Kong, reported that their journalists received harassing messages and were followed by unidentified individuals after covering public hearings into deadly apartment fires. The outlet has filed police reports over these incidents.
These acts follow a broader pattern of intimidation against journalists since 2024, including doxxing, threats, and harassment targeting multiple media outlets and press organizations. Police have yet to make arrests in earlier cases.
The targeting of journalists reflects the continued erosion of press freedom in Hong Kong. Hong Kong must end impunity for harassment and ensure that media workers can report freely without fear of intimidation or reprisal.
