About

The Human Rights Foundation, Cuban Freedom March, and the City of Miami Beach present “Doors to Freedom,” an art installation that tells the stories of artists exposing authoritarian regimes.

Artists Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara, Song Byeok, Zehra Doğan, the Gao Brothers, Pedro X. Molina, Azza Abo Rebieh, and Rayma Suprani have been censored, imprisoned, and exiled for simple acts of expression. Their works — satirical illustrations, radical performances, and figurative sculptures — expose truths that authoritarian regimes have attempted to silence. Here, the truth of their stories confronts us: art can cost everything, and freedom is never guaranteed.

“Doors to Freedom” features a collection of structures illustrative of the constraints imposed on the artists and the power of artistic expression, even under the harshest of conditions. These walls, traditionally symbols of confinement, instead reveal the artists’ creativity, bearing witness to their lived experiences. Art, at its most vital, doesn’t merely decorate — it testifies, disrupts, resists.

The Human Rights Foundation (HRF) is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that promotes and protects human rights globally, with a focus on closed societies.

HRF’s Art in Protest program seeks to elevate artists whose work is connected to their struggle for democracy and human rights. We offer dissident artists the opportunity to enhance their work through the Art in Protest Residency and provide various platforms and exhibition spaces to expand their reach. Art in Protest also brings art to HRF’s Oslo Freedom Forum global conference series to raise awareness about the state of artistic freedom on a global scale.

Stay connected with the Art in Protest program and be a part of this work: connect us with galleries and dissident artists, collaborate creatively, or sustain the program through donations or sponsorships to bring dissident voices to the global stage.
