HRF has petitioned the @WGEID on behalf of Rwandan journalist Cassien Ntamuhanga, who disappeared in Mozambique more than five years ago. #WhereIsCassien
On May 23, 2021, Ntamuhanga was taken from his home on Inhaca Island by uniformed agents. Media reports say he was handed over to the Rwandan Embassy in Maputo on June 1, 2021. Mozambique denies holding him, and the Rwandan government has never accounted for his whereabouts.
A journalist who has called for all victims of Rwanda’s violent past to be remembered, Ntamuhanga was jailed for the first time in 2014. After he escaped, his family faced reprisals, including three brothers missing since 2016. His case fits the Kagame regime’s pattern of transnational repression.
HRF urges the United Nations to press the governments of Mozambique and Rwanda to reveal Ntamuhanga’s fate and whereabouts and hold those responsible to account.
