HRF condemns the Ortega-Murillo regime’s latest constitutional reform in Nicaragua, which suspends the scheduled 2026 elections and extends their dictatorial mandate through 2028. This move codifies the regime’s ongoing assault on democratic legitimacy and cements total authoritarian control.
Passed by the regime-controlled National Assembly, the reform locks the exclusion of the opposition into Nicaragua’s constitution. It bars from candidacy or political leadership anyone accused of “foreign financing” or “sanctions,” or those labeled as “traitors” — effectively eliminating any real political competition.
The amendment also expands powers for the Supreme Electoral Council to outlaw parties. Although pending a mandatory second vote in January, approval is guaranteed; the regime-controlled legislature passed the first reading unanimously, rendering the upcoming vote a mere formality.
By extending presidential terms to 7 years and constitutionally banning dissent, Ortega and Murillo have reduced elections to a complete sham. The opposition was already barred from elections in practice, and this reform formalizes and codifies their exclusion in the constitution. HRF calls on democracies to reject this authoritarian power grab and support the Nicaraguan people in their struggle for justice and freedom.
