Ugandan police announced the discovery of Kabera’s body on Oct. 17 in Luwala village, roughly 45 km southwest of Kampala, where he was constructing a house. He was 50. His brother told reporters he had no enemies in Uganda, and that any threats or problems he faced came from Rwanda.
Kabera, a former Rwanda Defence Forces sergeant major and soloist in the Army Jazz Band, fled to Uganda in 2020, citing fears for his safety. The Rwandan military later opened a criminal case against him that his family says was politically motivated. While in exile, Kabera became an outspoken critic of Paul Kagame and his regime, building a following of more than 144,000 subscribers on his YouTube channel, “Major Robert TV.” In October 2023, he survived an attack by three unidentified assaillants.
Rwandan authorities have not commented on Kabera’s murder, but his death follows a pattern of suspicious assassinations and attempted assassinations of exiled critics of Kagame. Kabera was killed just days after Kagame’s regime secured a controversial 10-year deal with Formula 1.
