HRF strongly condemns Thailand’s recent reception of Burma’s Min Aung Hlaing, the former junta chief who was declared president in April 2026 following a series of sham elections. The visit is widely seen as granting recognition and false legitimacy to Burma’s violent military regime.
After assuming the presidency in April following a one-sided election, Min Aung Hlaing embarked on foreign visits to seek international recognition, including trips to China, India, and Laos. Meanwhile, Burma’s military continued its brutal crackdown on resistance groups and ethnic minority groups.
Following the February 2021 coup, Southeast Asian nations have largely adhered to ASEAN’s long-standing principle of non-interference. While ASEAN reached an agreement on the Five-Point Consensus, it has failed to end violence or resolve the country’s political crisis.
