Human Rights Foundation, @LantosFndn, and @freedomnoworg succeed in UN petition, Rwanda condemned for arbitrary detention.
On July 6, 2026, HRF received a favorable opinion from the WGAD in the case of prominent Rwandan opposition politician and long-standing pro-democracy figure Victoire Ingabire.
The WGAD found Rwanda’s repeated detention of Ingabire to be arbitrary and in violation of international human rights law, which includes her right to a fair trial. A tireless opposition figure, for years, Ingabire has been subjected to heavy repression at the hands of Paul Kagame’s regime. She is still imprisoned, unable to reunite with her children, awaiting what will be an unfair trial in a court subservient to the regime.
The three organizations and other members of Ingabire’s international legal team welcome the WGAD’s decision. It is time for the international community to take meaningful and coordinated action and demand the Rwandan regime immediately release Ingabire.
