1/ HRF condemns the Maduro regimeтАЩs persecution of critics, both at home and abroad, and its gross violations of human rights. All democracies must continue to pressure the regime to deter it from committing further crimes and to protect those who are targeted and face statelessness as a reprisal for defending the rule of law.
2/ On Sunday, Nicol├бs Maduro moved to strip prominent opposition leader @leopoldolopez of his Venezuelan citizenship. Lopez, a staunch opponent of the regime, spent seven years as a political prisoner unlawfully imprisoned in Venezuela and has been living in exile since October 2020. (Bloomberg)
3/ Maduro would be following the example of fellow Latin American tyrants Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo, Nicaragua’s co-dictators. So far, more than 450 Nicaraguans have been forcibly exiled and stripped of their citizenship and would have been left stateless without the intervention of democracies to provide them documentation.
