Joe Smith is a former commodity trader turned award-winning documentary filmmaker, storyteller, producer, and director. Before joining Patreon as the lead content producer, he was a producer and director for Wired and The Economist. Joe also produced content for Channel 4 and the BBC while working at the Emmy-nominated production company Blakeway Productions. Joe’s past films document the stories of North Korean smugglers, former child soldiers turned hip-hop artists, the Prime Minister of the UK, and reformed gangsters in El Salvador, among others. Joe won a Webby award in 2019 for a film about how MDMA can be used to treat PTSD. He also won the Lovie Award in 2019 and the Launch of the Year and Video Project of the Year at the British Media Awards in 2016.
