Gao Zhen

Gao Zhen is a Chinese and U.S. permanent resident, best known as one half of the Gao Brothers, an artistic duo recognized for provocative sculptures and installations that critically examine political authority, historical trauma, and state ideology. Much of his work revisits the legacy of Mao Zedong and the Cultural Revolution, blending satire with memorialization to question official narratives and collective memory in China. He was detained in 2024, drawing concern from international human rights organizations that view the action as retaliation for peaceful artistic expression.
