Mahrang Baloch

Dr. Mahrang Baloch is a Baloch human rights defender and the founder of the Baloch Yakjehti Committee, a network of activists and human rights defenders promoting human rights in Balochistan and advocating for accountability for enforced disappearances of Baloch people. Baloch was arrested at a peaceful protest on Mar. 22, 2025, and her family had no information about her whereabouts for the next 15 hours. She was finally located at Hudda District Prison in Quetta, where she is still held today. She was initially detained under the West Pakistan Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance (MPO), which permits detention for three months without trial. On Jul. 8, 2025, the day she was set to appear before a review board to challenge her detention under the MPO, Pakistan suddenly dropped the MPO case and instead brought her before an anti-terrorism court on alleged terrorism charges. On Jun. 22, nearly a year later and after a trial riddled with due process violations, she was sentenced to two terms of life in prison — for murder under Section 302(b) of the Pakistan Penal Code and for terrorism under Section 7(a) of the Anti-Terrorism Act of 1997.

My year in solitary confinement has not broken me. My peaceful fight for Baloch rights in Pakistan goes on
It’s 9pm and I’m sitting alone in my cell in block nine as I write these lines. I’ve been in solitary confinement for a year now. In fact, I turned 30 here.
