About

In authoritarian regimes like China, Russia, Belarus, and Venezuela, dictators weaponize the financial system to silence civil society. They freeze bank accounts, block donations, and monitor transactions, cutting off funding for organizations that challenge their rule. Without reliable, censorship-resistant financial tools, nonprofits struggle to pay staff, serve their communities, and continue their missions.

Bitcoin changes that. As a decentralized, censorship-resistant, and permissionless currency, Bitcoin provides a lifeline for nonprofits, activists, and journalists operating under oppressive regimes. But to use it effectively, nonprofits must know the right knowledge and tools.

That’s where HRF’s Nonprofit Bitcoin Education Program comes in. This program trains activists and nonprofits on how to integrate Bitcoin into their operations, ensuring they can receive donations, pay staff, and remain financially resilient, even under financial repression.

Anna Chekhovich

Nonprofit Bitcoin Adoption Lead, Human Rights Foundation

Anna Chekovich understands firsthand how Bitcoin can be a lifeline for nonprofits under repression. As the financial manager at Alexei Navalny’s Anti-Corruption Foundation (ACF), she helped keep operations running despite Vladimir Putin’s financial crackdown. She used Bitcoin to pay staff, receive donations, and bypass the regime’s surveillance. Since 2016, ACF has relied on Bitcoin to stay financially independent and operational. Now, as HRF’s Nonprofit Bitcoin Adoption Lead, Anna is equipping nonprofits worldwide with the same tools to resist financial censorship and sustain their missions.
