About

The Oslo Scholars program offers university students the opportunity to spend a summer interning with some of the world’s leading human rights defenders and activists.

Based on their academic background, regional knowledge, and thematic interests, HRF matches students with activist-led organizations. Internships, which span 9-12 weeks during the summer, provide students with unique, hands-on experiences working on research and/or field projects relating to human rights and democracy.

Past Oslo Scholars have spent their summers analyzing the impact of hate on the mind, assisting with litigation to help free political prisoners in Venezuela, researching the environmental consequences of Russia’s war in Ukraine, leading a canvassing program to educate students about human rights violations in Tibet, developing a human rights training program for Angolan police officers, and much more.

I was blown away by the effort and determination of the activists. It was astounding to be researching and reading about the people that I was working with – I was so impressed by their perseverance. The internship definitely gave me more motivation to keep working in the activism space.

Testimonials

[Oslo Scholars] serves as a seedbed for future human rights defenders. We hope that by completing their internships, each scholar has discovered how they can contribute to the human rights cause in their own way and continue making a lasting impact.
