Anaya was detained shortly after publicly criticizing the concentration of state powers in the Executive Branch, the weakening of the separation of powers, the shrinking of democratic spaces, and the arbitrary detention of anti-corruption lawyer Ruth López.
A year later, his case remains marked by serious due process violations. The proceedings are under total secrecy, and Anaya has faced restricted contact with his lawyers and family, obstacles to accessing the case file and evidence against him, and limitations on his ability to prepare his defense.
Today, HRF stands in solidarity with Enrique Anaya, his family, Cristosal, and all Salvadorans calling for justice and accountability. Anaya should not spend another day behind bars. The international community must press for his immediate release, full respect for due process, and the implementation of the IACHR’s precautionary measures.
