HRF strongly condemns the conviction of Kwok Yin-sang under Hong Kong’s Article 23 in retaliation for his US-based daughter @AnnaKwokFY ’s activism. Targeting a parent for a child’s advocacy is a serious and appalling escalation of transnational repression.

The conviction sets a precedent under Article 23 for the charge of “handling assets of an absconder.” This case is widely seen as retaliation for Anna’s overseas activism and aims to silence other exiled dissidents by threatening their families. The court is scheduled to deliver his sentence on Feb. 26.
