Asia-Pacific (China) – May 14, 2026

HRF welcomes the bipartisan @CECCgov letter respectfully urging @POTUS to raise the cases of political prisoners directly with China’s Xi Jinping and confront the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)’s transnational repression.

The letter raises 20 cases, including those of Dr. Gulshan Abbas, Ekpar Asat, Pastor Jin, and Ilham Tohti, among others, and urges the US State Department to establish a regularly-updated priority list of political prisoners and exit-ban cases to reference in all senior-level diplomatic engagements with the CCP.

Among them is the case of Gao Zhen, a 70-year-old US lawful permanent resident detained in China for his artistic expression. His wife and son remain under surveillance and an exit ban in China, preventing their safe return home to New York.

These cases show how the CCP imposes costs on Americans and US-based families through detention, fear, and mobility restrictions to pressure speech and advocacy inside the United States. HRF will continue to closely monitor updates surrounding the upcoming Trump-Xi Summit.
