MENA (Iran) – Jan 16, 2026

/ Since peaceful protests began against Iran’s dictatorship on Dec. 28, at least 12,000 people have been killed and 18,000 arrested. These numbers are current best estimates, as the regime’s restriction of internet and communication channels on Jan. 8 has stifled the flow of information out of the country.

/ The regime has intensified arrests and killings since the communications blackout. Protesters are unable to consistently share videos and photos of mass atrocities. One video that has surfaced showed family members identifying loved ones in piles of body bags.

/ Other reports state that regime officials are firing at protesters with AK-47s. Protesters have told people outside of Iran that they are wearing tags with their names and phone numbers on them for identification should they be killed.

/ HRF continues to stand with the Iranian people and calls on democratic governments to support those inside Iran. The regime must immediately end the violence and mass human rights violations.
