Middle East (Iran) – Jan 9, 2026

HRF condemns the Iranian dictatorship’s decision to shut down the internet and block communication channels in response to the ongoing anti-regime protests. It is the thirteenth day of demonstrations, which have spread across at least 46 cities in 21 provinces.

The regime has previously restricted internet access to commit mass human rights violations. During the Bloody November uprising in 2019, the regime shut down the internet and killed at least 1500 protestors. Now, more than 2,200 people have been arrested, of whom at least 166 are under the age of 18. (HRANA)

The Islamic Republic must immediately end the violence and mass human rights violations. HRF stands in solidarity with the Iranian people and calls on democratic governments to condemn the abuses and support those in Iran.
