Two years ago, on July 28, 2024, Venezuela’s democratic opposition won the presidential election in a landslide, only to have the result overturned by Nicolás Maduro’s regime. Venezuelans were denied the peaceful democratic transition they had overwhelmingly chosen.
wo years later, Maduro’s removal from power has not brought freedom. Under Delcy Rodríguez, the same repressive state apparatus remains in place, with power still concentrated in the executive, independent institutions hollowed out, and 372 political prisoners still behind bars, according to @ForoPenal.
Although Nicolás Maduro is no longer in power, the authoritarian system he led remains. Venezuelans continue to face political persecution, while the authoritarian system responsible for decades of repression remains intact and continues to deny them their fundamental rights.
