Art is a powerful tool for dissent in closed societies, provoking constructive dialogue and creating space for debate beyond mainstream bodies of political discourse. Authoritarian governments around the world recognize the power of art as a conduit of change and systematically persecute, repress, or censor artists to silence political dissent.

Since 1994, Belarus has been ruled by Alexander Lukashenko. For nearly three decades, he has established near-total control over Belarus’ law enforcement, judiciary, and political system, turning the country into one of the most repressive states on the planet. In August 2020, after failing to address the COVID-19 pandemic, falsifying the results of the presidential elections, and committing egregious human rights abuses, Lukashenko faced nationwide protests.

Fans count on celebrities to use their platforms to bring wider attention to important issues. Public figures often leverage their celebrity to support just causes or endorse organizations that seek to bring about meaningful change in society. Authoritarian regimes exploit celebrities, social media influencers, entertainment brands, and professional sports institutions to cultivate a false appearance of progress in mainstream popular culture, spread their political propaganda, and obfuscate international accountability.

The CCP Disruption Initiative endeavors to increase awareness about the CCP’s ongoing attacks on civil liberties and inspire a change in public attitudes toward Xi Jinping’s authoritarian regime. The program’s main areas of focus include corporate intimidation, digital surveillance, the crackdown on Chinese human rights defenders, the Uyghur genocide, the severe stifling of freedoms in Tibet, the trampling of freedoms in Hong Kong, and threats against Taiwan’s sovereignty.
