This month marks 25 years since Eritrea — a highly centralized totalitarian regime per HRF’s #TyrannyTracker — permanently closed down its civic and political space by arresting and forcibly disappearing more than 30 dissidents. HRF joins international calls for proof of life and the immediate release of all political prisoners, including prominent journalists Dawit Isaak and Seyoum Tsehaye.
This week, HRF joined a global coalition of international human rights groups calling on Sweden and the European Union to obtain proof of life, consular access, independent medical care, and the release of Swedish-Eritrean journalist Dawit Isaak, who was arrested on Sept. 23, 2001, and last seen in 2005. HRF stands with @FreeDawit and others in amplifying calls to #FreeDawitIsaak
Dawit was arrested the same day as legendary Eritrean war photographer Seyoum Tsehaye. HRF stands with his family and the @onedayseyoum campaign in seeking his freedom.
The crackdown began on Sept. 18, 2001, following the publication of a joint letter by the G-15 group of reformist senior officials and leading journalists, including Dawit and Seyoum, demanding democracy and elections. At the 2026 @OsloFF , Eritrean poet and writer Yirgalem Fisseha shared her experience of the country’s descent into dictatorship.
