Last weekend, Ugandan human rights activist and 2018 Oslo Freedom Forum speaker Jerry Sesanga received a threatening Facebook message from an unknown sender. The message was sent just two days after Sesanga published a satirical poem criticizing Museveni’s authoritarian regime in a local newspaper.
The message read: “We have warned you several times about your writings on politics in this country, but it seems you are not understanding. Wait for Action. Anytime soon you will see what we can do. No more warnings.”
HRF condemns this threat against Sesanga, which is clearly aimed at intimidating him into self-censorship. The Museveni regime regularly employs threats and harassment to silence journalists, activists and government critics.
